A subsidiary of NTR (National Toll Roads) announced plans today to build a 50m biodiesel plant in Cork Harbour.
NTR unit Bioverda Ltd, said that the facility will convert local and imported vegetable oils from rapeseed and other crops into high-quality biodiesel.
The eco-friendly fuel can be used as a direct substitute for regular diesel.
The facility will represent a 50m investment in Cork Harbour and Bioverda says it will be one of the largest such plants in Europe. It will employ around 30 people directly.
Construction will start within the next 12 to 18 months subject to planning. The plant will have port access in order to be able to accept economically viable quantities of feedstock vegetable oils.
The Government recently announced plans to introduce more biodiesel into the Irish market in order to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil.
