Xerox Ireland has announced a review of its operation at Ballcoolin, near Blanchardstown in North-West Dublin.
The printer and copier group said the review was at its early stages and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2007.
Xerox employs about 1,700 people in Ireland, some 1,3000 of those at Ballycoolin in Dublin. A spokesperson said it would be premature to comment on the conclusions of that review.
In a statement, Xerox said: "It is normal business practice for any company to evaluate, on a continuous basis, ways in which it can maximise efficiency and improve value to its customers.
"It is always our policy to communicate fully with our employees regarding changes that may affect them. This will very much be the case with this review, once the conclusions are known and any potential impact assessed.
"The scope of this process does not include activities in our Dundalk plant," the statement said.
Xerox (Europe) Ltd operates a European Business Service Centre at Ballycoolin, providing customer services and a shared financial services centre. Xerox Ireland's sales and engineering team is also onsite. The firm has a large number of relatively young staff and workers of many different nationalities working for it in Ireland.
'Our staff is a critical resource and it is part of the responsibility of every manager to ensure workers are not only aware of their importance but have it borne out in practical ways, by having their needs and suggestions addressed promptly', says Mary O'Driscoll, Head of Group Resources says on the company site.
The plant opened in 1998.
In December 1999, the Government agreed IDA Ireland support for a further £34 million investment by Xerox Europe Limited in respect of an additional 600 new jobs at its Irish operations - 420 in Dublin and 180 in Dundalk. "This is a further significant endorsement of Ireland's continuing ability to provide the skilled people, services, infrastructure and cost competitive environment required to support a major global operation, " the then Tánaiste Mary Harney said.
"This announcement is a further success for the Government's policy, implemented by IDA Ireland, of winning investments by companies already located here which will widen the scope of their operations and add higher value activities at their facilities. At full implementation Xerox will be of major strategic importance for Ireland as it will have an extensive range of business functions successfully operating at two separate locations. It will be a valuable reference for IDA Ireland in its marketing," said the Tánaiste.
