Energy represents the biggest cost increase for small and medium sized enterprises globally over the last two years so there are good business as well as environmental reasons for Irish SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises) to adopt a green approach to IT. The CSO reported today that employment in Irish private firms (with five or more persons engaged) in the construction industry decreased by 5.4% in November 2007 by comparison with November 2006.

Forfás says Employment in IDA and Enterprise Ireland client firms grew by 1,187 in 2007; Over 18,500 people were employed in research activities across Ireland in 2007
Forfás, the Irish State policy and science advisory agency today reported a resilient performance in the internationally-trading enterprise sector of the Irish economy during 2007, with the exporting sector strong, employment remaining stable and firms stepping up measures to improve productivity performance. It also noted that while overall economy performance was positive, the year did pose difficulties for enterprise with a loss in international price competitiveness due to the appreciation of the euro and higher inflation rates in Ireland relative to our trading partners.

Irish consumer sentiment fell for the sixth month in seven in December. The overall IIB Bank/ESRI Irish Consumer Sentiment Index fell marginally in December 2007. The Consumer Sentiment Index was 62.7 in December, compared to a figure of 63.1 in November.

Aer Lingus begins Belfast-London Heathrow service; Ryanair's Michael O'Leary visits Shannon on last day of Aer Lingus service to London
Aer Lingus's Chief Executive, Dermot Mannion, along with other senior executives, will be at Belfast's Aldergrove Airport this morning for the opening of the new Aer Lingus service from Belfast to London. At Shannon Airport on Sunday, the last Aer Lingus flight to London Heathrow, took off in the late afternoon. Also at Shannon, Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary turned up to help lift the pall of gloom.

Irish Construction: December data signalled record falls in activity - housing, civil engineering and commercial sectors
The Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) – a seasonally adjusted index designed to measure the overall performance of the Irish construction economy – posted its lowest reading in the series history (which began in June 2000) at 35.7. The substantial decline in activity in the three sectors - housing, civil engineering and commercial - was attributed by firms to the conclusion of existing projects and a lack of new work to replace them.

Britvic Ireland to cut 60 jobs in Cork
Britvic Ireland today announced plans to invest €7.6 million in its Dublin manufacturing operation in a move towards best-in-class manufacturing. The upgraded facility will also accommodate production volumes from the company’s Cork plant. The moves, which are designed to boost operating efficiencies in the highly competitive soft drinks market, will result in 60 job losses in Cork on a phased basis over the next 12 months.

Irish Live Register increased 2,100 in December; Grew 14,987 in 2007 to 171,800 at end of December
The CSO reported today that the seasonally adjusted Irish Live Register total increased from 169,700 in November to 171,800 in December, an increase of 2,100. This compares with an increase of 5,000 in November.

Irish Financial Services Ombudsman, Joe Meade, today published on his website significant decisions made in the July/ December 2007 period -15 instances where he upheld complaints and 5 complaints that were rejected . 4374 complaints were made to his office during 2007 – an increase of 15% over 2006.
