EU launches “European Enterprise Awards” to recognise excellence in entrepreneurship as Europe's Top 500 Growth Companies honoured

Ireland's DCC gets a No. 7 ranking - To qualify for Europe's 500 list, a company must have its base either in one of the 25 European Union member states or in Iceland, Norway, or Switzerland. It must have been founded before 2002, have had at least 50 employees but no more than 5,000 at the beginning of 2001, and have shown profits at least once during a three-year reference period.
Today, the European Commission and the UK Presidency launched the “European Enterprise Awards” on the occasion of the “Enterprising Britain Summit” in London. In related news, Europe's top 500 growth companies will be honoured this week at the Entrepreneurs for Growth Summit 2005 in Barcelona this week.

Five hundred of Europe’s fastest growing mid-size companies have created some 130.000 jobs across all industry sectors over the last three years. Not only have these ‘champions of growth’ grown employment by an impressive 14% annually but they have also increased their turnover by the same amount.

These are amongst the key findings of the 2005 edition of the annual Europe’s 500 pan-European ranking of highgrowth, job-creating companies, published by Europe’s 500 Entrepreneurs for Growth and supported by Microsoft and KPMG.

In the European Commission’s recent review of the Lisbon Strategy and the publication of its Integrated Guidelines for Growth and Jobs in April it is noted that the “average annual growth in some Member States remained below 1% over the period 2001-2003.” In that same period the 2004 Europe’s 500 companies maintained an average annual growth of 15%.

“European politicians focus on growth and jobs – this is a declared goal of the reviewed Lisbon agenda,” points out Martin Schoeller, President of the association Europe’s 500 Entrepreneurs for Growth. “We believe that competition between the European nations helps to push reforms and learning from each other. However, policies need to be improved in the areas of growth financing, part time jobs and international trade policy to support more mid sized companies that can grow fast but also manage to sustain their growth.

A typical Europe’s 500 company grows quickly and way beyond the classic definition of an SME. For example, the French company Gameloft, developers and publishers of games for mobile phones, ranked # 4 in this year’s Europe’s 500, increased employment from 58 to 722 in just three years. Two thirds of the companies listed this year have a similar profile and fall into the mid-size category (more than 100 and less than 1.000 employees).

It is not only the ability to grow fast that makes these Europe’s 500 companies excellent role models for Europe’s future. It is also the fact that these ‘champions of growth’ can be successful in any business sector, whether young or old industry. IT services once again dominate this year’s ranking with 111 companies (22% which is up from 15% and second place last year) but manufacturing also remains consistently high – industrial goods account for 18% and, if combined with industrial services, actually outweigh IT with a total of 25% of the five hundred companies. Whereas employment growth is highest in the transport and logistics sector with an outstanding annual average of 23%.

Every year since its foundation in 1996, Europe’s 500 has shown that growth is not industry or sector specific. Companies that qualify for the Europe’s 500 manifest entrepreneurial leadership, innovation, job creation, vision and market expertise. Essential qualities that support the European Council’s strategy for sustainable growth.

Launch of “European Enterprise Awards” to recognise excellence in promoting entrepreneurship

Today, the European Commission and the UK Presidency launched the “European Enterprise Awards” on the occasion of the “Enterprising Britain Summit” in London. These new awards recognise and reward initiatives by local and regional authorities to support entrepreneurship. They aim at raising awareness of positive enterprise activities and celebrate entrepreneurial success in developing Europe’s economy. The deadline for receipt of entries at national level is 31 May, 2006 with the winners to be announced at a ceremony in November 2006.

Commissioner Günter Verheugen, responsible for enterprise and industry policy, said: “The European Enterprise Awards recognise excellence in regional and local policies that promote entrepreneurship. A favourable environment for business, in particular small and medium-sized enterprises, is crucial to stimulate Europe’s economic growth. I call on all participating countries to promote these awards and to send in entries before 31 May next year.”

Local and regional authorities in countries participating in the European Commission enterprise programme (EU Member States, Bulgaria, Iceland, Norway, Romania and Turkey) are encouraged to participate. This includes towns, cities, regions and communities as well as public-private partnerships between public authorities and entrepreneurs, educational programmes, and business organisations.

The awards objectives are fourfold:

  • To identify and recognise successful activities to promote enterprise and entrepreneurship;
  • To showcase and share examples of best entrepreneurship policies and practices;
  • To create a higher awareness of the role entrepreneurs play in society;
  • To encourage and inspire potential entrepreneurs.

The Commission intends that the winners of these awards will act as role models across the regions of Europe, aiming to create environments where entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship can flourish.

There are five categories in the European Enterprise Awards.

  • The Entrepreneurial Trailblazer Award will recognise actions that promote an entrepreneurial culture and mindset.
  • The Enterprise Support Award will reward innovative policies that promote enterprise and attract investment, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
  • The Red Tape Reduction Award will reward measures to simplify administrative procedures for businesses, in particular for start-ups.
  • The Investment in People Award will recognise initiatives to improve entrepreneurship education and training.
  • Responsible entrepreneurship will honour corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices.

Finally, a Jury’s Grand Prize will be awarded to the entry that is considered the most creative and inspiring entrepreneurship initiative in Europe.

A high profile jury, consisting of European entrepreneurs, leading business people, academics, as well as members of both the European Commission and national governments will select the winners of the European Enterprise Awards.

Last year’s Enterprising Britain competition is the inspiration for the European Enterprise Awards. Sherwood Energy Village was the national winner and demonstrated local people taking their own future in their hands. The former mining community with a bleak future focused its efforts for the future on sustainable development and transformed the area into a renewable energy village, attracting business and residents to the area.
