"We are building more than double the amount of housing units in 2004 than in 1997" the Minister said. "In facing up to the challenges effecting housing supply a number of years ago, the Government has created an environment for these substantial improvements in supply. This has brought us to the position where we are building at a much higher rate than our EU colleagues – at over 19 houses per 1,000 people" the Minister asserted.
House completions in Dublin at 16,810 units are up 113% and in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA – Dublin City and County, Counties Kildare, Meath and Wicklow) at 25,915 units up 140% on 1994. "I am particularly pleased that this achievement has been seen throughout the country, but in particular in the highly populated areas of Dublin and the Greater Dublin area" the Minister stated.
New house registrations in 2004 at 60,782 showed an increase of 6.9% on 2003. "The increase in house registrations together with the significant supply of serviced land already announced by me, augurs well for continued house building for the foreseeable future", the Minister continued.
The Minister also indicated that he expected considerable growth in the output of affordable housing through the various affordable housing schemes with about 11,000 expected to be delivered through these schemes in the period 2005 to 2007.
