Ahern confirmed that in the first seven months of 2006, 51,752 houses and apartments were completed nationally up 23.6% on the corresponding period in 2005. Dublin at 10,869 units and the Greater Dublin Area at 16,982 units are up 13.5% and 17.6% respectively on the corresponding period in 2005. "At this stage, it is likely that the number of new houses completed during the course of this year will exceed all previous records," stated Minister Ahern. "The Government's focus is to maintain the high levels of housing supply with targeted policies aimed at increasing the provision of both social and affordable housing," Minister Ahern stated. The leading indicators of housing construction also show positive trends with new House Registrations growing strongly over the last year and reporting record levels with 42,300 units registered for the first 7 months - an increase of 16.9% on the number registered in the same period in 2005. Some 41,000 new houses were also started during the first 6 months of 2006 – a 2.5% increase on the first half of 2005, and 8% above the number of units started in the second half of 2005.
Table 1 shows first 7 months house completions by county, while Table 2 shows the number of house completions over the last thirteen years and the first 7 months of 2006. Table 3 shows the total number of new house starts for the first 6 months of 2006 and Table 4 outlines the number of new houses registered with Homebond and Premier Guarantee up to 31 July 2006. Table 1: Total House Completions: Seven months 2006 compared with first seven months 2005
Note: House completions data series are based on the number of new dwellings connected by ESB Networks to the electricity supply and may not accord precisely with local authority boundaries. These represent the number of homes completed and available, and do not reflect any work-in progress. ESB Networks have indicated that there was a higher backlog in work-in-progress in 2005 than usual (estimated as being in the region of 5,000 units). This backlog was cleared through the connection of an additional 2,000 houses in Quarter 1 2006 and 3,000 houses in Quarter 2 2006.
