The Shannon-based charter airline Eirjet suspended all its flights today due to financial difficulties. Eirjet, which began operating in 2004, leased passenger aircraft to holiday tour companies and was operating charter services out of Dublin, Belfast Cork, Shannon and Knock airports. It employs about 30 people. The company founders include former Skynet Airlines personnel and Bernard Healy, who owns Idray, a Dublin company controlling the operations of Omni Tours, Omni Travel, Malaga Express and Faro Express. The company was issued with a ten day "temporary licence" by the Commission for Aviation Regulation on Tuesday amid concerns that the airline would cease operations before the end of the month. In a statement this afternoon, Eirjet said it was trying to secure funding in an effort to keep afloat. "We have voluntarily suspended all flights as and from today so as to minimise the inconvenience to the public. We are endeavouring to secure further financial support to try and save the company and remain in negotiations with the Irish Aviation Authority. We are in very difficult financial circumstances at the moment," it said.
