Eircom to broadband enable an additional 319 exchanges
By Finfacts Team
Apr 4, 2007, 14:35
Eircom today announced its plans to commit an extra €30m to broadband enable an additional 319 communities around the country. This will allow up to 140,000 extra customers to connect to a broadband enabled exchange. It is hoped that the work will be completed within a couple of years.
Today’s announcement comes five months after the company announced it will broadband enable an additional 100 exchanges nationwide in 2007. In January, eircom committed to a ‘take all orders’ programme, to provide broadband to everyone living within the five main urban areas of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
In total, more than 900 exchanges representing 96% of the working telephone lines in Ireland will be connected to a broadband exchange in the coming couple of years. These announcements are a clear demonstration of eircom’s public commitment to increase broadband availability in Ireland, the company said.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Pierre Danon, eircom Chairman said, "We made a promise and we are delivering on that promise. This is the largest number of exchanges announced by eircom to be enabled. I have said repeatedly on record that eircom will remain frustrated until everyone who wants broadband can get it. Today’s announcement coupled with the announcement we made in October last year shows we are serious about our commitment to increase broadband availability in Ireland. "
Commenting further Mr Danon said, "There are approximately 200 exchanges that are economically unviable under all circumstances. eircom welcomes the Government’s intention to introduce a tender for the provision of broadband services to areas where the provision of broadband is uneconomic for eircom and other industry players.
Consumer Broadband Lobby Group IrelandOffline broadly welcomed the eircom announcement.
Chairman of IrelandOffline, Damien Mulley stated "This is a signifcant step from eircom and one which should bring Ireland from the bottom of most broadband league tables to somewhere much nearer the top, where we deserve to be.
The new eircom is consistently proving their commitment to delivering broadband to the people and should be commended. We would however ask them to set out a timetable for when these exchanges will be upgraded as consumers are tiring of hearing 'real soon now'. "
The announcement means that 900 of the 1100 eircom exchanges will eventually offer broadband to consumers and businesses.
Mulley did however warn that people will still be disappointed as the announcement still does not mean everyone can get broadband.
"200 eircom exchanges are still not on any upgrade list and because eircom's network hasn't been cared for well in the past, many people while connected to a broadband exchange cannot get broadband because of the poor quality of lines. Until these are addressed, people both in cities and in rural areas still won't be able to get broadband." Mulley added.
