Dr. Michael Spence, a winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics and Chairman of the Commission on Growth and Development, says that sustained high growth in developing economies is a recent, post-World War II phenomenon. Using GDP figures, "high" is above 7% and "sustained" is over 25 years or more. He says that these cutoffs are arbitrary, but a similar picture emerges with variants. Growth at these rates produces very substantial changes in incomes and wealth: Income doubles every decade at 7%.

Hedge Funds outperform benchmarks through March; Index up +0.98% in March, +2.82% year-to-date
The Greenwich Global Hedge Fund Index yielded +0.98% in March, for year-to-date returns of +2.82%, according to a preliminary report released today by US firm Greenwich Alternative Investments, LLC.

Survey says national average for Irish workplace absenteeism is 3.8% or 9 working days
A new report by the Small Firms Association has shown that small businesses in Ireland lose on average €757 million per annum through absenteeism. The report also shows that workers in small companies are less likely to miss work through illness than their counterparts in larger businesses.

Today, the US Labor Department reported the economy added 180,000 payroll jobs in March, up from 113,000 in February. The March figure considerably exceeded the consensus forecast, which was 135,000.

US added 180,000 jobs in March; Unemployment rate falls to 4.4% as data exceeds expectations
US nonfarm payroll employment rose by 180,000 in March, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 4.4 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Employment increased in construction, retail trade, and health care. The number of manufacturing jobs continued to trend down. Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents, or 0.3 per cent, over the month.

Zumo, Europe's largest chain of smoothie and juice bars has awarded the electricity supply rights for twenty of its outlets to competitive electricity provider Energia.
